چکیده

The purpose of the present article is to review recent advances made in the determination and calculation of improved bounds on the effective properties of random heterogeneous media that depend upon the microstructure via n-point correlation functions. New breakthroughs made in the quantitative characterization of the microstructure of heterogeneous materials are also reviewed. The following four different effective properties shall be studied: (i) effective conductivity tensor (which includes, by mathematical analogy, the dielectric constant, magnetic permeability, and diffusion coefficient); (ii) effective stiffness tensor; (iii) diffusioncontrolled trapping constant; and (iv) fluid permeability tensor. It shall be demonstrated that improved upper and lower bounds can provide a relatively sharp estimate of the effective property even when the bounds diverge from one another. Although this article reviews stateof-the-art advances in the field, an attempt will be made to elucidate methods and principles for the nonexpert.

Generation of Love Wave in a Media with Temperature Dependent Properties Over a Heterogeneous Substratum

The present paper deals with the generation of Love waves in a layer of finite thickness over an initially stressed heterogeneous semi-infinite media. The rigidity and density of the layer are functions of temperature, i.e. they are temperature dependent.  The lower substratum is an initially stressed medium and its rigidity and density vary linearly with the depth. The frequency relation of Lo...

A differential approach to microstructure-dependent bounds for multiphase heterogeneous media

We present a new method of deriving microstructure-dependent bounds on the effective properties of general heterogeneous media. The microstructure is specified by the average Eshelby tensors. In the small contrast limit, we introduce and calculate the expansion coefficient tensors. We then show that the effective tensor satisfies a differential inequality with the initial condition given by the...

Effective Properties of Random Composites

We propose a new concept of the effective properties of composites with uncertain spatial arrangements of constitutive materials and within-material properties. Rather than replacing a heterogeneous property with a constant effective parameter, we seek to preserve the internal macro structure of a composite. This general concept is used to derive the effective conductivity of composite heteroge...

Trapping constant, thermal conductivity, and the microstructure of suspensions of oriented spheroids

The n-point probability function S,, (r”) is fundamental to the study of the macroscopic properties of two-phase random heterogeneous media. This quantity gives the probability of finding n points with positions r”= {r ,,...,r,} all in one of the phases, say phase 1. For media composed of distributions of oriented, possibly overlapping, spheriods of one material with aspect ratio E in a “matrix...

Geometrical-parameter Bounds on the Effective Moduli of Composites

We study bounds on the effective conductivity and elastic moduli of two-phase isotropic composites that depend on geometrical parameters that take into account up to three-point statistical information concerning the composite microstructure. We summarize existing bounds, apply a special fractional linear transformation to simplify their functional forms, and describe two approaches to improve ...
